Prerequisites

Description

Barber apprentices train in a licensed salon under a licensed professional, learning the skills of cutting, styling, coloring, permanent waving or straightening hair. In addition, cosmetologists give manicures, pedicures, scalp and facial treatments; provide make-up analysis; and clean and style wigs and hairpieces. Continually changing fashion trends affect hairstyles and techniques, requiring successful professionals to stay up to date in creating a total look for contemporary men, women, and children.

  • 3,712 hours on-the-job training
  • 288 hours paid related instruction
  • The theory training in the classroom focuses on the chemistry involved with each subject, along with proper sanitation and safety procedures.
  • After completing the program, apprentices must pass the state test to be licensed as a practitioner.
