New student member appointed to
Wisconsin Technical College System Board
MADISON – Governor Scott Walker has appointed Natalie Cruz to the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) Board as a student member. A Hartland resident and student at Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC), Cruz will serve a one-year term.
Cruz received a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Oklahoma, but later discovered her passion is teaching young children. She will receive an associate degree in Early Childhood Education this month and is concurrently enrolled in the Instructional Assistant program at WCTC.
"I am one of the adult learners who turned to their communities’ technical colleges for immediate and relevant retraining," Cruz said. "I feel I can bring a different perspective as a non-traditional student and as a mother whose child has also attended a technical college," Cruz added.
Cruz currently volunteers as a literacy assistant at Pewaukee Lake Elementary School and is a member of the Education Club Council, the National Technical Honor Society and Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.
Cruz attended her first State Board meeting May 15. The 13-member WTCS Board establishes statewide policies and standards for educational programs and services provided by the 16 technical college districts. The Board also administers state and federal aids to the colleges.
Wisconsin’s Technical Colleges offer more than 300 programs, awarding two-year associate degrees, one- and two-year technical diplomas and short-term technical diplomas. In addition, the System is the major provider of customized training and technical assistance to Wisconsin’s business and industry community. More than half of all adults in Wisconsin have accessed the technical colleges for education and training. The technical colleges have been making futures for 100 years.
